Girls Night In Inspired By Bridget Jones

Everyone's favourite 90s girl is back, and we're inspired to do a girls' night in - Bridget style!

Bridget Jones is mad about the boy, and we're mad about her. Everyone's favourite nineties chick is back, and she's inspired us to go all out for a girls' night in!

Think Chardonnay, curries and plenty of crisps and dips - with omelette and marmalade toast for breakfast, of course.

Like Bridget, we couldn't quite bring oursleves to settle for second best, and so we've called on some of our most-trusted local suppliers to give us a nineties vibe with a grown up taste!

Chardonnay: Bridget single handedly drove Chardonnay sales the world over and it simply wouldn't be a nineties night in without a nice, chilled bottle or two. I can sense your eyebrows raising, but I promise you're going to love our recommendations. More below.

Curry: She loved a curry, but hated to cook. You just know she'd have been a fan of Praveen Kumar Premium Ready Meals. Pakora, rice and authentic Indian recipes. Almost as delicious as Mark Darcy in his Christmas jumper!

Crisps and Dips: Is it even a girls' night in if you don't have crisps and dips? A solid nineties staple that works with equally well with friends and gossip as it does signing into your hairbrush on your own. We've ditched the pickled onion monster munch in favour of a more sophisicated crunch!

Omelette and Marmalade on Toast:  Bridget's madcap breakfast was certainly one of her more creative culinary endeavours. We suggest you include both in a continental, morning-after spread - but perhaps you should eat them seperately!

Chardonnay: The Return

As much as we love Bridget, we think she may have a little to do with the move away from Chardonnay post-nineties. A one time favourite of women everywhere, this versatile grape fell out of favour in the early 2000s for the altogether more sophisticated Chablis.

However, did you know that all Chablis is, indeed, Chardonnay? We're here to convince you to look again; here's the breakdown.

Chardonnay V Chablis

  • Chardonny Grape: Chardonnay is a type of green-skinned grape used to make white wine.
  • Taste: It can taste very different depending on where it’s grown and how it’s made. So oaked vs. unoaked, warm vs. cool climates.
  • Try: Les Mougeottes Chardonnay or Aubert & Mathieu "Suzy" Organic Chardonnay

  • Chablis Grape: Chablis is a region in northern Burgundy, France. All wines labeled "Chablis" are made from 100% Chardonnay grapes.
  • Taste: Chablis wines are typically unoaked with bright acidity and strong mineral notes (think citrus, green apple, and wet stone). They’re much lighter and crisper compared to rich, buttery Chardonnays from California or southern Burgundy.
  • Try:

Why the Confusion?

It's grape vs region. Saying Chablis is the same as Chardonnay is a bit like saying "Champagne is the same as sparkling wine."  Technically, it’s true - but "Chablis" refers specifically to the style and region, which is quite distinct from other Chardonnay wines.

In short: All Chablis is Chardonnay, but not all Chardonnay is Chablis!

 Les Mougeottes Chardonnay, £12.95

Lemon and vanilla on the nose with a round, fruity body and a hint of vanilla oak character. Has more ripeness than a Macon and more savouriness than the New World, making it ideal by the glass

Aubert & Mathieu "Suzy" Organic Chardonnay, £16.95

Organic Certified, Suzy is a surprising, pure and elegant wine. The palate is straight forward and gives way to pleasant roundness with citrus, apple and peach flavors.
