Meet your maker....The Grown Up Chocolate Company April 02, 2016 11:14

One of our favourite mid afternoon treats to enjoy with a cuppa has to be a bar of Superb Salted Peanut Caramel from The Grown Up Chocolate Company. Its like a posh snickers but sooooo much better!

The Cress Company, who supply us with some of our fabulous products, recently caught up with Emily from the aforementioned chocolate geniuses and found out more about what she has to offer. We loved it so much we thought we'd share it with you here.

Why is your chocolate different to others on the market?

We make all of our chocolates by hand, here in the UK. We only use the very best ingredients and we have always aimed to make truly indulgent chocolates – we wouldn’t have it any other way!

Tell us how your company began.
Back in 2011 we had an idea to recreate the chocolate bars we used to eat as children but this time make them with really good ingredients for Grown Ups only. James (the owner) already owned a chocolate business that supplied the hospitality sector, so we had a lot of experience that we could use. We launched at the Speciality Fine Food Show in 2011 and the feedback was brilliant- we haven’t looked back.

What is your favourite product from the range?
It has to be the Superb Salted Peanut Caramel bar. This was our first creation and it makes up around 30% of everything that we do. We won a Quality Food Award this year for, it’s brilliant to be recognised within the industry for all the hard work we have put in.

Tell us something we might not know about the product
You may already know that we are making our chocolates by hand, but when we say handmade we really mean it. We make the caramel totally from scratch, we hand pipe the bars and even sprinkle the sea salt into each bar. It takes a long time and a lot of skill to learn how to make a Grown Up bar- it’s not for the faint hearted.

Tell us the best bits and the worst bits of your job
Best Bits - That’s an easy one, it has to be when Grown Up is recognised by a true stranger. I was once buying a Grown Up bar from one of our stockists (as you do, quality checking obviously) and the cashier told me to go back and buy the others from the range as this was her favourite brand of chocolate.
Worst Bits - We all live off a constant supply of tea. When the milk runs out, those can be dark moments. In desperate moments, we have been known to get milk delivered from our local packaging supplier.

Tell us about your team
Our Grown Up team are an interesting bunch. We have people from all over and the thing that unites them is their love of chocolate and Grown Up. We have been known to work well into the night making chocolates and it’s amazing how chirpy everyone is after a few slices of emergency pizza.

What motivates you?
We have a map on the wall in the office ‘A Glorious Map of Grown Up World Domination’ – I think that sums it up nicely.

What’s on the horizon?
We’ve got lots of exciting things coming up in the next few months, we have just been chosen as a supplier for Virgin Atlantic- so are Grown Up chocolates will be flying across the Atlantic as we speak.

If you could be a food, which food and why?
It has to be chocolate really doesn’t it?
